It sounds like if it boots to a pixelated screen you need to reboot to make it normal again. As screen settings are held it PRAM, try resetting that.

Apr 13, 2020 The W5700X, Vega II, and Vega II Duo have two Thunderbolt controllers each. The Mac Pro can have up to 6 Thunderbolt controllers total. People have successfully connected three XDR displays to a single Pro Vega II - two to the Vega II and one to either the Mac Pro top or to the Mac Pro I/O card. That's one more than Apple says is supported.

Reset the system

You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.

Reset the resolution

Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:

  1. Start up in Safe Mode.
  2. From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
  3. Choose Displays
from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
  4. Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
  5. Restart your computer.
  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on your Mac.
  4. Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  5. Release the keys.

Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.

What is the very best straight PC (non flashed) graphics card that will go into a Mac Pro 3,1 early 2008 model? I've heard a lot about Nvidia cards being straight plug-and-play but I wasn't sure if that went for anything Nvidia or just certain models.

If the answer to this is none then what's the best flashed PC card that will work? I currently have a flashed Radeon HD 5850 that still works okay but is showing its age.

Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), 3,1 (early 2008)
